Q Resources Read/review the following resources for this activity: Link (video): The Artisan Soul Minimum of 2 appropriate online resources Introduction As you will discover in the coming weeks, the humanities include a great many subjects. Visual arts, music, drama, literature, philosophy, religion, communication, feminism, culture, and many other subdisciplines all help us better understand what it means to have personhood. The concept of personhood in this context does not have to do with biological differences between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom. Instead, personhood in the humanities helps us understand how our ways of thinking, expressing ourselves, and experiencing the world enhances and inhibits our ability to live and enjoy life. Properly appreciated, the humanities should lead us to being more intelligent, more compassionate, more empathetic, and more insightful. Regardless of one’s profession, the humanities matter because they help us better understand our fellow man. Leaders in business, industry, sports, government, and other occupations have written about why the humanities matter in their areas. This week we will examine that concept to get a better grasp on how the humanities help us appreciate the many ways people experience and express all that it means to be human. Also, this week, the onus shifts to you to do some research and evaluate what you find. You will be asked to find some information on the internet using search terms. In the resulting links you get, you will need to read the pages to determine if they meet the criteria for the assignment. Initial Post Instructions Start by searching the internet using one of the following terms (or similar phrase): Why study the humanities? Why are the humanities important? How do the humanities help us understand personhood? Find at least two web pages that you believe answer that question in a thoughtful way. In your post write about each of the following: Describe why you believe each of the pages you chose are appropriate for answering the search question. Summarize each page. Analyze the content of each page and what you learned from them. Focus specifically on how the humanities help us understand what it means to be human. Properly cite your sources using MLA style. Note: These results do not need to be from scholarly journals, but they do need to be reliable sources from people recognized as experts in some way. Secondary Post Instructions Respond to your classmates’ posts by analyzing their research results and commenting on their findings. Writing Requirements (MLA format) In addition to one initial post, respond to at least two peers. Initial Post Length: minimum of 350 words (Citations do not apply to your total word count.)
